Name: Infinity, Inc.
Universe: Post-Crisis
First Appearance: Infinity Inc. #33
History:
They were the next generation of super-heroes, wishing to take their place with their mentors. What surprised the youthful members of Infinity, Inc. was the cold shoulder given them by the Justice Society of America, America's first group of meta-humans. What bothered most of them was that they were rejected by their own parents! Hector Hall – the Silver Scarab – was the son of the original Hawkman, Northwind was Hawkman's godson, Fury's mother was the original Fury, and Jade and Obsidian were convinced they had some connection with the original Green Lantern.
Determined to learn crimefighting one way or another, these teens decided the best way to learn is through on-the-job training and working together. So was born Infinity, Inc., the brainchild of Sylvester Pemberton, the Star-Spangled Kid. Pemberton was a hero during the 1940s who was lost in time after a disastrous case, but rescued later by the JSA and the Justice League of America. He served with the JSA for a time but decided these young heroes bidding for membership needed a veteran's guidance. Besides, he was physiologically closer in age to these heroes than he was to the JSAers. (Also joining the team for a time was Power Girl, annoyed at the paternalistic attitude taken by the aging JSAers.)
Infinity, Inc. was headquartered at Stellar Studios in Los Angeles, one of many holdings Pemberton inherited from his wealthy family. A shrewd marketer, the Star-Spangled Kid held an official press conference to introduce the team to the public, then signed a deal with the city to officially sanction his group. Since that initial press conference, members of the team went public with their identities, although those with parents in the business have mostly remained mum.
While the Infinitors thrived and grew in size during the few years it was in business, they were never a happy team with one crisis after another plaguing the membership. Their baptism of fire was pitting themselves against the JSA's deadliest foe, the Ultra-Humanite, who managed to manipulate the JSA into acts of evil. With that success under their belts, the team went on to confront common thieves, extraterrestrials, mystical foes, their parents' enemies, and even each other from time to time. Perhaps their toughest moment came when they had to watch helplessly as the JSA willingly journeyed into limbo to battle Norse demons to save the world. The Infinitors believe they will never see their parents and mentors again.
Of course, as with any group of teens thrown together in close proximity, romances and crushes blossomed and waned. Fury and the Silver Scarab fell in love and had a child, but the Scarab was corrupted and temporarily turned into a version of the second Sandman before ultimately dying and being freed by Morpheus, the one true Sandman. Nuklon had a crush on Fury but has gotten over it, dedicating himself to his studies. Power Girl and the Star-Spangled Kid (by then dubbed Skyman) flirted for a while, but he dated Jonni Thunder, a local private eye with problems of her onw. Jade and Brainwave fell in love and continue their relationship under the watchful eye of Jade's over-protective brother Obsidian.
The team lost Power Girl when she decided to concentrate on her private life, and Northwind later chose to remain in the hidden land of Feithera, to help his people rebuild after a cataclysm. In turn, the group added Wildcat, Hourman, and Dr. Midnight – all freshly minted version of their predecessors.
Plaguing the team most often was internal strife which had members not getting along, dropping out, and losing their powers or even their desire to fight crime. Not helping matters was the recurring problem of the genetically altered beings called Helix. Led by Mr. Bones, a chain-smoking, walking skeleton who speak in rhymes, this team constantly fought Infinity to a standstill. Mr. Bones was tried and remanded to the team for a lengthy probationary period. Also taggin along with the team for a time was Solomon Grundy, the legendary being who hates Jade's father Green Lantern, but is like a puppy dog around GL's energetic daughter Jade.
Infinity, Inc. never made enough of a splash with the public to garner much support, and they rarely interacted with other meta-humans. When Mr. Bones accidentally killed Skyman, the glue that held the team together was gone. Everyone went their separate ways and the dream of a junior Justice Society died with Skyman. Despite globe-threatening events, the Infinitors have not reteamed, choosing to follow their individual careers.
Wildcat is now a rock journalist; Nuklon continues to study engineering; Jade and Obsidian are in Hollywood with Jade trying to start an acting career; Dr. Midnight practices medicine; Fury is retired, raising her baby daughter; and the other have unreported activities. Mr. Bones and Solomon Grundy remain at large.
