Green Lantern Corps
Green Lantern Corps

Name: Green Lantern Corps
Universe: Earth-1
First Appearance: Green Lantern #9

History:
An organization formed by the immortal Guardians of the Universe to combat evil throughout the known cosmos, the Green Lantern Corps has a standing membership of 3600 sentient beings chosen above all others for their honesty and fearlessness. Each Corps member patrols a space seector encompassing a tenth of a degree of an imaginary circle emanating from Oa, the legendary planet located at the very center of the universe.

Originally conceived as an android army known as the Manhunters, who were abandoned after centuries of use when they proved unreliable, the GL Corps was at first armed with guns that took their energy from handheld power batteries, which in turn drew their energy from the gigantic master power battery back on Oa. Eventually, the Guardians developed power rings composed of a material that can turn will power into raw energy. The rings can absorb a limited charge from the handheld power battery, lasting the equivalent of 24 Earth hours, and are capable of doing almost anything their owners can conceive. The only weakness of the power ring is that it is ineffectual against anything colored yellow.

Recently, the most prominent members of the Green Lantern Corps have included: Hal Jordan and his successor, John Stewart, protectors of space sector 2814; Tomar-Re of the planet Xudar, defender of space sector 2813; the insect-like Xax of Xaos; the crystalline Chaselon of Barrio III; Katma Tui of Korugar, beautiful guardian of space sector 1417; the plant-like Medphyl of J586; Stel of Grenda, the world where robots rule; the carnivorous Arkkis Chummuck, who sacrificed his life to save his comrades; Arisia of Graxos IV, teenaged champion of space sector 2815; the amorphous Eddore of Tront; the noble Gallus-Zed; the daredevil Ch'p of the planet H'lven; Earthman Charlie Vickers, for a time the ring-slinger of space sector 3319, now retired; the reptilian Salakk of Slyggia; Holika Rahn of the planet Rhoonm who disguises her emerald power as magic; and the Green Man, nameless protector of space sector 2828, who put aside his power ring to join the freedom-fighting Omega Men.
